I really shouldn't be allowed to (re)watch documentaries on membrane theory.. I understand it almost perfectly (as a theory) but it's the origin of our universe question that freaks me out.

Many of you reading this have, I'm sure, spent hundreds of confused hours between the ages of eight and sixteen pondering what exactly was here before the “big bang”, what was here before that and how long it was there for.

I honestly don't know how physicists remain sane, maybe they don't. Many of the theories proposed strike me a thousand people trying to solve a million puzzles with one answer. That's never, ever going to happen!

It's often been said that we simply aren't capable of contemplating such vast distances, timescales, dimensions, et cetera.

I'm down with learning, theorising is my homeslice, pondering is my rent-boy, the quest for knowledge is my bitch and imagining is my dawg, but surely there comes a time when we have to throw our hands up and admit that despite our giant brains, equations/physics/laws/mathematics don't and can't answer everything and there are a lot of things that are forever going to remain a mystery.

They're theories, that's all they'll ever be.
